Drivers planning a trip over the mountains Tuesday, Oct. 7, may want to throw some chains in the trunk.

About 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected to fall in the north Cascade Mountains Tuesday, heralding the first significant snowfall of the season, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Seattle issued a winter storm watch, effective until Tuesday afternoon for areas above 4,000 feet in the north Cascades.

West-facing slopes could also receive localized snowfall of up to 8 inches, and gusty winds may make temperatures in the area feel like they are in the 20s.

The National Weather Service urges those traveling in the watch area to be prepared for severe winter weather and to carry food, water, blankets and a flashlight in case of an emergency.
