The section of Mount Baker Highway that reaches Artist Point will close for the season at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, according to a State Department of Transportation press release.
A cool weather system expected to hit the area tonight could drop as much as 3 inches of snow or more in the Cascade passes and on the windy road, making it unsafe for drivers.
Artist Point is located at the end of Mount Baker Highway and boasts 360-degree views of Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker. The road, at more than 5,000 feet above sea level, is typically buried under snow and closed October through June. There are no guardrails along the roadway.
Crews will move the closure gates into place at milepost 54.7, just north of the Mount Baker ski area near the parking lot for the Bagley and Chain Lakes trailheads.
The road to Artist Point will reopen summer of next year.
